How to use Hotkey Test
- 1 Open this tool in the GoodWebTools desktop app.
- 2 Click the shortcut field and press the key combination you want to test (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+G).
- 3 Switch focus to another app and press the same combination — the tool logs whether the hotkey fires.
- 4 Use this to confirm your chosen shortcut does not conflict with system or app-level shortcuts.
Frequently asked questions
Why is this desktop-only?
Global hotkeys — shortcuts that fire even when the browser is not focused — require OS-level integration that web browsers cannot access. The desktop app uses Tauri's native hotkey API to register and test them.
Does it register the hotkey permanently?
No. The hotkey is only active while you are on this page inside the desktop app. It is unregistered automatically when you navigate away.
Which modifiers are supported?
Ctrl, Shift, Alt and Meta (Windows key / Cmd) are all supported in any combination, along with any letter, digit or function key.
What if my chosen shortcut is already taken?
The tool reports whether registration succeeds or fails. If a system shortcut or another app already holds the combination, registration will fail and you will see an error — choose a different combination.
